How to apply for duplicate PAN card if original PAN card is lost?
If you have lost your original PAN card then you can apply for duplicate PAN card both online and offline. Both TIN-NSDL and Itself allow online application and payment for duplicate PAN card. Its procedure is as follows:

Types of PAN Card
Since PAN card is available for individuals and companies, there are different forms for applying for a PAN card. Following are the details of PAN card and its application form:

This is the most common PAN card issued to individuals. Application for this can be made through Form 49 available online on the website of NSDL and UTIITSL. Any eligible Indian individual, student and minor can apply for it.
NRIs and PIOs can avail PAN card for the purpose of taxation in India. They also have to submit Form 49A to avail this card.
PAN Card for Foreign Entities Paying Tax in India
Firms or corporates that are registered outside India but pay tax in India by virtue of their business operations in India can also avail PAN card. They need to fill and submit Form 49AA for the PAN card application process.
PAN Card for OCI and NRE
Overseas Citizen of India and Non Resident Entities can also apply for PAN Card. The relevant form that needs to be filled by them while applying for PAN card is Form 49AA.

PAN Card Structure – PAN Card Information
The PAN card contains very basic information that qualifies for proof of identity and age under KYC (Know Your Customer) norms. PAN card contains the following information:
Cardholder Name: The most important information is the name of the cardholder. In the case of an individual it shall be the name of the individual, in the case of a company it shall be the name of the company and in the case of a partnership firm it shall be the name of
Cardholder's father's name: If the PAN card is of an individual then his/her father's name will be there in the PAN card
Date of Birth: In case of PAN card of an individual, the date of birth of the cardholder is mentioned below the father's name. This information qualifies as proof of date of birth for the cardholder. In case of companies and partnership firms, the date of their registration is mentioned
PAN Card Number: The next and most important information is the Permanent Account Number or PAN Number. Each person/company has a different PAN number and contains different information. This number is generated on the basis of information provided by the cardholder. It is a 10 letter alphanumeric number and each letter carries some information. These characters contain the following information:
First three letters: The first three letters are alphabetic and range from A to Z.
Fourth character: The fourth character of the PAN number tells the category of the taxpayer. These categories are as follows:
A – Association of Persons
B – Body of the person
C – Company
F – Firm
G – Government
H – Hindu Undivided Family
L – Local Authority
J – Artificial Judicial Person
P – Personal
T – Association of Persons for Trust
Fifth letter - The fifth letter is the first letter of the person's surname.
Rest of the letters - The rest of the letters are random. The first 4 characters are numbers while the last one is an alphabet.
Signature of the person- The last information on the PAN card is in the form of the signature of the person. As such, PAN card also serves as proof of signature of the person required for various financial transactions
Photograph of the individual – The photograph of the cardholder is also present in the lower right hand side of the PAN card which enables the card to act as a photo identity proof of the individual. In case of companies and firms, no photograph is present on the card
Benefits of PAN Card
Following are the benefits of PAN card:
For filing taxes: Individuals and companies are required to quote their PAN number for filing taxes. If there is no PAN card, individuals and entities will have to pay tax at 30% of their income irrespective of the tax slab they fall in. Hence, PAN number is required for filing taxes. PAN card status can be checked by PAN number.
Business Registration – It is mandatory for companies, partnership firms, Hindu Undivided Families or other entities to have a PAN number to register their businesses.
Financial Transactions: Any person/company can do financial transactions only if he/she has a PAN card. Sale or purchase of any immovable property, the value of which does not exceed Rs.5 lakh. or more, Sale or purchase of any vehicle other than a two-wheeler, Deposit of an amount exceeding Rs.50,000 in any bank, Purchase of bonds of the value of Rs.50,000 or more, Withdrawal of funds outside India, Travel abroad 25,000 if such expenditure exceeds Rs. 50,000 and above, buying mutual fund schemes, buying insurance policies or shares worth Rs.50,000 and above, etc.
For availing utility connections – In many instances when utilities like post-paid mobile phone connection, LPG connection, electricity connection, internet connection etc. are required, PAN card comes in handy. However, it is always advisable that you use alternative ID proofs like DL, Voter ID card, etc. if possible.
For opening bank account: These days PAN card has become a mandatory document for opening bank account under KYC (Know Your Customer) rule.
